What this does
Contracts are often initialled in the same corner of every page, to show that every page was seen. This puts your initials and the date there in one pass, on every page or on the pages you name, drawn into the page rather than stuck on top of it. As with a signature, it is a record rather than a proof.
What it will not do
Every tool here says what it cannot do, in its own words, before you rely on it.
- Initials placed here are a drawing of initials. They become part of the page and nobody can take them off again — but by themselves they are not evidence of anything: everyone who has the file can see them, and anyone can draw another set like them.
- They are drawn on top of the page, so a page whose own content already reaches into the margin is written over rather than reflowed.
- They are not a qualified electronic signature under eIDAS and are on nobody’s trusted list. Where the law or a counterparty requires one, this is not one.
- Typed initials are set in a handwriting face where there is one: the file you chose, or the one this site offers as a download. With neither, they are set in an italic serif and the result says so.
- A pictured set of initials is drawn exactly as it arrives. A transparent background lets the page show through; a white one is drawn as white, and will cover what it sits on.
- Shaping and joining come from the font itself, and nothing reorders a line: text is drawn in the order it is given, so a line mixing right-to-left and left-to-right writing comes out in that order rather than in reading order.
Questions people ask
Can I initial only some of the pages?
Yes. Give the pages the way you would give them to a printer — 1-3, 7 — and only those are initialled.
Does this prove I saw every page?
No more than initialling on paper does. It is a mark on the page that everyone with the file can see and anyone can draw. For anything cryptographic, add a certificate signature with Sign PDF.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The work happens in this browser tab, on your own machine. There is no server in this product to send a file to, which is why the promise is checkable rather than something you have to take on trust: open your browser's network panel and watch it do the work without making a request.
Is there a size limit, or a limit on how many files?
None that we impose. The limit is your own machine's memory, because that is where the work happens — a few hundred megabytes is comfortable on a laptop, and less on a phone. There is no daily task counter, no queue and no account.
What does it cost, and what is the catch?
Nothing, and there is no paid tier that unlocks features: the whole product is the free one. That is affordable because running it costs us nothing — your computer does the work — so there is no per-file cost to recover, no advertising and no data to sell.
