What this does
A PDF that will not open is usually not destroyed, only mis-referenced: the table saying where each object lives has gone, or the file was truncated part-way. This rebuilds the document from whatever is still in it by scanning for the objects directly, and tells you afterwards what had to be reconstructed and what could not be — because a document that had to be rebuilt should say so before you rely on it.
What it will not do
Every tool here says what it cannot do, in its own words, before you rely on it.
- Repair recovers what is still in the file. Content that never arrived — the tail of a download that stopped — is gone, and no tool can bring it back.
- A page whose content cannot be decoded is kept and comes out blank, so the pages after it keep their numbers.
- A rebuilt page tree is flat, and pages found by scanning are in the order the file stores them, which is usually but not always reading order.
- A protected document is written back out in the clear. Protect it again if it needs a password.
Questions people ask
Will I get everything back?
You get back what is still in the file. If a download stopped half way, the part that never arrived is not there and no tool can produce it. The result says how many pages are gone and what was rebuilt.
Do I need to run this before the other tools?
No. Anything you drop into any tool here is repaired on the way in if it needs to be, and the file’s row says so. This page is for when you want the repaired file itself.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The work happens in this browser tab, on your own machine. There is no server in this product to send a file to, which is why the promise is checkable rather than something you have to take on trust: open your browser's network panel and watch it do the work without making a request.
Is there a size limit, or a limit on how many files?
None that we impose. The limit is your own machine's memory, because that is where the work happens — a few hundred megabytes is comfortable on a laptop, and less on a phone. There is no daily task counter, no queue and no account.
What does it cost, and what is the catch?
Nothing, and there is no paid tier that unlocks features: the whole product is the free one. That is affordable because running it costs us nothing — your computer does the work — so there is no per-file cost to recover, no advertising and no data to sell.
