What this does
This turns a PDF back into an editable Word document with real paragraphs, headings, lists and tables, plus the pictures in the places a reader would have met them. It is a conversion rather than a round trip: the text is set again by Word from the structure that was inferred, so lines and page breaks fall where Word puts them and the two documents will not look the same side by side.
What it will not do
Every tool here says what it cannot do, in its own words, before you rely on it.
- This is a conversion, not a round trip. It gives back an editable document that says what the PDF said; it does not give back the page, and the two will not look the same side by side.
- A PDF does not record what was a heading, a list or a table; it records type at sizes in places. All of that is inferred from the page, and a page laid out unusually will be read unusually.
- The faces, sizes, colours and exact positions of the original are not carried across, and neither is anything drawn rather than typed: a chart, a logo outline, a signature.
- A picture comes across at the resolution the PDF stored and the size the page drew it, in the place a reader would have met it — but a picture the text wrapped around lands after that text rather than beside it.
- Scans stored as CCITT fax, JBIG2 or JPEG 2000 are left out: Word cannot read any of them.
- A scanned page holds a picture of words. Run OCR over it first, or the document will come back with the pictures and none of the text.
Questions people ask
Why does the Word document not look like the PDF?
Because it is a document rather than a picture of one. The fonts, exact positions and page breaks of the original are not carried across — what is carried across is what the document said, in a form you can edit.
My scanned PDF came back with pictures and no text.
A scan holds a picture of words. Run Make a scan searchable over it first, then convert — or the conversion has nothing but images to work with.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The work happens in this browser tab, on your own machine. There is no server in this product to send a file to, which is why the promise is checkable rather than something you have to take on trust: open your browser's network panel and watch it do the work without making a request.
Is there a size limit, or a limit on how many files?
None that we impose. The limit is your own machine's memory, because that is where the work happens — a few hundred megabytes is comfortable on a laptop, and less on a phone. There is no daily task counter, no queue and no account.
What does it cost, and what is the catch?
Nothing, and there is no paid tier that unlocks features: the whole product is the free one. That is affordable because running it costs us nothing — your computer does the work — so there is no per-file cost to recover, no advertising and no data to sell.
